Water Stocks News -American Water Confirms Water Quality is Not Impacted by Swine Flu

American Water Confirms Water Quality is Not Impacted by Swine Flu

VOORHEES, N.J.--April 28 2009 --American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE:AWK), the largest investor-owned U.S. water and wastewater utility company, communicated to its customers today that influenza viruses, including swine flu, are effectively removed by filtration and disinfection.

“In the United States, federal and state drinking water regulations require filtration and disinfection of all surface water supplies (e.g., those from lakes, reservoirs, or rivers). These regulations specify specific treatment requirements for removal and inactivation of viruses,” said Dr. Mark W. LeChevallier, director of Innovation & Environmental Stewardship for American Water. “Because influenza viruses, including swine influenza A (H1N1), are more susceptible to disinfection than most enteric viruses (like Poliovirus, Hepatitis A, or Norovirus), and the influenza viruses are slightly larger and more effectively removed by filtration, current drinking water treatment barriers provide a high degree of protection from “swine flu.” We want to reassure our customers that they do not need to be concerned about the safety of properly treated drinking water with respect to swine influenza A.”

Founded in 1886, American Water is the largest investor-owned U.S. water and wastewater utility company. With headquarters in Voorhees, N.J., the company employs more than 7,000 dedicated professionals who provide drinking water, wastewater and other related services to approximately 15 million people in 32 states and Ontario, Canada. More information can be found by visiting www.amwater.com.

Water Stocks Sector Close- Up; Environmental Impact of Produced Water in Oil and Gas Industry

Water Stocks Sector Close- Up; Environmental Impact of Produced Water in Oil and Gas Industry

How Nature Group (LSE: NGR-GB.L), Siemens (NYSE: SI) Water Technologies and Wescorp Energy Inc. (OTCBB: WSCE) are providing Solutions for the Oil and Gas Industry

Point Roberts, WA, Delta, BC - April 23, 2009 - www.InvestorIdeas.com, a leading global investor and industry research portal covering water, environment and oil and gas sectors, presents a water stocks sector close-up on produced water in the oil and gas industry, problems and solutions. Publicly traded companies providing solutions include Nature Group (LSE: NGR-GB.L), Siemens (NYSE: SI) Water Technologies and Wescorp Energy Inc. (OTCBB: WSCE ).

According to the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), part of DOE’s national laboratory system, approximately 15-20 billion bbl (barrels; 1 bbl = 42 U.S. gallons) of produced water are generated each year in the United States from nearly a million wells, and more than 50 billion bbl of produced water are generated each year at thousands of wells in other countries.

As water and environmental issues now play a major role in the future of the oil and gas industry, here is how three public companies are coming up with solutions.

Wescorp Energy Inc. (OTCBB:WSCE) an oil and gas solutions provider of water remediation and environmental technologies , announced in December 08, that Weatherford International Ltd., (NYSE: WFT) had executed a letter of intent for the testing of Wescorp's wholly-owned water remediation technology, H2Omaxx, in two projects in South America. H2Omaxx is a water remediation unit that consistently provides safe, effective and economical separation of oil from produced water.

When asked if Wescorp Energy (OTCBB: WSCE ) technology works for all produced water applications, on shore and off shore, Dave LeMoine, Vice President of Business Development commented, “In general the answer would be yes, Wescorp’s technology has been independently proven to have a high level of scalability and effectiveness, allowing it to be used on a single well to multi well applications or projects such as Offshore Platforms or in conventional or unconventional oil development such as the Oilsands in Alberta. Wescorp gives the oil companies three streams, Clean water Clean solids and Ultrafines and resalable oil
The client problem could be environmental, cost related, regulatory compliancy, revenue generated, process improvement based, or a host of other issues. “

According to NATURE GROUP’s (LSE:NGR-GB.L), CEO, Richard Eldridge, “ There is now wide agreement within the petroleum industry, governments and scientists that focus should now be put on dissolved organic components, heavy metals and production chemicals. The oil in water content shall be as low as possible and the industry shall make use of best available technology (BAT).”

The Nature process for treatment of produced water is based on addition of patented
coagulant/flocculant in existing or partially modified water systems. The agent is injected
into the produced water upstream a static mixer or various process equipment (pumps,
valves etc.) to provide sufficient in- mixing. The agent separates dispersed and dissolved
hydrocarbons and is floated and skimmed off in a flotation vessel downstream the in-mixing
point.

SIEMENS A G ADR (NYSE: SI) Siemens Water Technologies was recently selected by Petro-Canada to provide a system for treating coal-bed-methane (CBM) produced water at the Mitchell Draw CBM Project near Gillette, Wyoming, USA. The system will treat 72,000 barrels per day (3 MGD) of CBM produced water, removing contaminants like sodium (Na) and total dissolved solids (TDS), which will allow the plant to meet current state regulatory requirements.
Siemens states it has 750 onshore and offshore produced water treatment systems, treating about 6 million barrels of water per day.

According to Eddy Isaacs, managing director of the Alberta Energy Research Institute, “Companies now have to worry about the environment as much as they need to worry about their production.” *1

So What is Produced Water?
The US Department of the Interior defines Produced water as “mainly salty water trapped in the reservoir rock and brought up along with oil or gas during production. It can contain very minor amounts of chemicals added downhole during production. These waters exist under high pressures and temperatures, and usually contain oil and metals. Because of this, they must be treated prior to being discharged overboard. As with drilling muds, following treatment, they must be tested for toxicity and cannot exceed set discharge rates.”

Most produced waters contain combinations or mixture of: Dissolved inorganic salts, dispersed oil droplets, dissolved organic compounds (dissolved "oil"),treatment and workover chemicals dissolved gases (particularly hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide),bacteria and other living organisms, and dispersed solid particles.

The Produced Water Society reports, “The ability to efficiently and economically dispose of this water is critical to the success in the oil production business. “

Featured Water Stocks Showcase Company: Wescorp Energy Inc. (OTCBB: WSCE )
Wescorp Energy Inc. (OTCBB: WSCE) is an Oil and Gas solutions provider focused on deploying its water remediation and environmental technologies that overcome tough operational challenges facing oil and gas operators today on a global basis. Virtually anywhere in the world oil is produced contaminated water is produced, this includes associated formation water in conventional oil and gas production and potable water used in unconventional oil production such as the massive Oil Sands development in Alberta Canada.
Using conventional oil/water/solids separation technology, between 0.05% - 5% (500 ppm - 50,000 ppm) residual oil content remains in the water, Wescorp's patented, proven and highly scalable H2Omaxx microscopic aeration technology addresses this crisis by being able to increase the recovery of oil and reduce the amount of hydrocarbons in the contaminated water to less than 0.001% or 10 ppm. Wescorp's H2Omaxx is extremely economical and environmentally friendly eliminating the use of chemicals, filtration systems, high temperature systems and high pressure vessels.

"Greening" Government: IBM Consulting Offering Helps Public Officials Reduce Energy and Water Use, Waste, Environmental Impact

"Greening" Government: IBM Consulting Offering Helps Public Officials Reduce Energy and Water Use, Waste, Environmental Impact

WASHINGTON, DC and ARMONK, NY - IBM (NYSE: IBM) has introduced the first consulting service designed to help government organizations analyze energy and water use, assess waste management, evaluate overall environmental impact and develop improvement strategies.

The IBM Public Sector Energy and Environment Diagnostic can help governments better understand their overall performance on environmental issues, identify improvements that can increase energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact including greenhouse gas emissions, and help ensure public institutions meet their own rising environmental standards.

IBM developed the diagnostic to help U.S. federal agencies comply with current requirements for broad improvements in efficiency and economy for all environmental, energy and transportation management operations. However, it can be adapted to any future requirements for U.S. government agencies or for use with any other federal, state or municipal government in any country.

"Citizens everywhere are demanding that governments improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact, and public officials at every level are responding by raising standards for how they operate," said Eric Riddleberger, IBM's business strategy consulting global leader, who heads up the company's corporate social responsibility consulting efforts. "Using a comprehensive approach that employs new, smart processes and tools to assess current performance and develop improvements can help public agencies meet those standards while maintaining proper levels of public service."

The IBM Public Sector Energy and Environment Diagnostic offering uses a proprietary Heat Map tool to provide an initial analysis. Based on IBM's Component Business Model approach, the tool breaks organizations down into logical segments -- finance, operations, procurement, etc. -- and then provides an analysis as to how well they are performing in terms of efficiency, cost and environmental impact.

Areas for potential environmental improvement are color coded -- red for "most critical," yellow for "moderately critical," and green for "performing within guidelines" -- to help government institutions prioritize where to make changes. From there, IBM can assist government agencies in developing a comprehensive strategy for prioritizing and implementing those changes, accounting for the cost and benefit of each solution.

Specific areas addressed in the diagnostic are:
Environmental management systems -- identifying leadership, establishing targets, tracking performance and communicating with stakeholders; Energy and greenhouse gases -- addressing efficiency and use of renewable sources; Water management -- reducing consumption and improving quality; Waste and disposal -- waste prevention, recycling, environmentally responsible disposal, and reducing the use of potentially toxic and hazardous chemicals; Facilities and equipment -- sustainable practices in motor fleets and renovation and construction operations; Workforce programs -- establishing workforce sustainability programs, training, benefits, and awards for environmental sustainability leadership. The Public Sector Energy and Environment Diagnostic joins a growing portfolio of consulting offerings from IBM designed to help clients address CSR issues throughout their operations, including: the CSR Assessment and Benchmarking Utility, the Carbon Tradeoff Modeler, Green Sigma™, Environmental Product Lifecycle Management, the Supply Chain Network Optimization Workbench (or SNOW), and Strategic Carbon Management.

The public sector diagnostic is designed to be used together with many of these other offerings. For example, after completing an analysis and identifying areas for improvement with the public sector diagnostic, clients can use Green Sigma™, which applies Lean Six Sigma principles to measuring and monitoring energy and water usage throughout a organization's operations, and the Carbon Trade-off Modeler, which helps evaluate and balance carbon dioxide emissions and energy usage with other key factors throughout a supply chain -- cost, service and quality.
These offerings use "smart" approaches, such as advanced business processes and monitoring dashboards, which allow clients to collect and analyze large amounts of data to make better decisions.

The parties are obligated to negotiate the terms of the acquisition in good faith until March 31, 2009. This deadline may be extended to May 31, 2009 through the payment of CAD $5,000 to Synergy BioMetals Recovery Systems Inc.

About Mine Wastewater

The US Environmental Protection Agency ranks mining as the United States' top toxic polluter, reporting more toxic releases annually than any other sector. Acid generation occurs naturally in the mining process as waste rock and metal tailings are exposed to water and oxygen. The result is contaminated, toxic water that has serious ramifications on the local environment if left untreated. The EPA estimates that over 40% of US western waterways are contaminated by mining activities.

About ERC:

The ERC process, defined as the Electrochemical Reduction of Carbon dioxide, combines captured carbon dioxide with water to produce high value materials, such as formic acid and formate salts, which are conventionally obtained from the thermochemical processing of Fossil Fuels. However, ERC has an advantage over the established thermochemical methods for converting carbon dioxide to liquid fuels.

While thermochemical reactions must be driven at relatively high temperatures that are normally obtained by burning fossil fuels, ERC operates at near ambient conditions and is driven by electric energy that can be taken from an electric power grid supplied by hydro, wind, solar or nuclear energy.

MVTG also expects that the complementary nature of ERC and the electro-oxidation process that drives fuel cells may make it possible to use ERC in a regenerative fuel cell cycle, where CO(2) is converted into a fuel that is consumed in the fuel cell. The company is also exploring ERC applications for the production of steel and fuel additives.

Stimulus legislation small step forward in addressing water needs

Stimulus legislation small step forward in addressing water needs

AWWA: For water infrastructure, the glass is half full

For Immediate Release: February 17, 2009

(DENVER, CO) – President Barack Obama today signed into law an economic stimulus bill thatprovides $2 billion for drinking water projects and $4 billion for wastewater projects. American WaterWorks Association (AWWA) Executive Director Gary Zimmerman issued the following statement.

“For communities seeking to repair or replace critical water infrastructure, today’s signing representsand important step forward in addressing a growing national challenge. The more than $6 billioncommitted for water and wastewater needs will push forward projects critical to our nation’s publichealth protection, fire protection, economic strength and our overall quality of life.

“While the funds committed represent only a tiny fraction of the need, AWWA is optimistic that theinvestment in water will jump-start many critical projects and create hundreds of thousands of new jobs. From this perspective, the glass is certainly half full.

“We applaud Congress’s decision to waive requirements that states provide matching funds, whichwould be difficult in today’s economic climate and will speed distribution of funds. It also makes goodsense to give priority to projects that can begin construction within a year, giving utilities necessary timeto complete construction plans or obtain environmental permits.

“These funds will be distributed through State Revolving Loan Fund programs with at least half beingissued as grants, negative-interest loans or similar no-cost financing tools. AWWA will actively assist itsmembers in understanding how to apply for and secure these funds, including offering a free webcastat 1 p.m. EDT Feb. 26.

“One of the hopeful upshots of a recession is that we are all forced to pay attention to things that mattermost in our daily lives. The renewed focus on water infrastructure has helped bring the conversationabout our buried water pipes above ground. Hopefully, this increased public awareness of the need toreinvest in water infrastructure will make us all better stewards of our water resources and systems.”For more information on AWWA’s efforts associated with economic recovery legislation, visitawwa.org/jobcreation.

AWWA is the authoritative resource for knowledge, information, and advocacy to improve the qualityand supply of water in North America and beyond. AWWA is the largest organization of waterprofessionals in the world. AWWA advances public health, safety and welfare by uniting the efforts ofthe full spectrum of the entire water community.
